[Apologetics] Bigotry in Chicago

Hi all,

If "imagery is a idol" then is it safe to assume that you don't have any photos in your house, wallet, or office?

Using your logic, taken to the extreme, written words are images of the sounds we make so they idols also. Therefore, Holy Scripture would be an idol (which some people do almost make the Bible into an idol). And we all know that is ridiculous.

Hi

I don't believe that the Catholic position is indefensible. It's simply a matter of deciding to what extent a spirit God can be worshipped in a physical way. The Bible - New Testament as well as Old - is filled with physical forms of worship.

I go into that at the end of my article on statues on my website at http://www.theotokos.co.za/adventism/idols.html

God bless,

Stephan;

I happen to agree with the journalist's position. God is a Spirit; We who worship Him, do so in Spirit and Truth! Syncretism has penetrated into our worship through the accretion of symbols that have no place in our worship.

Personally, I hate, and I mean "HATE", all of the portraits of blue-eyed, golden hippy haired icons and statuary that represent God or man. Mary has great honor in my theology, because under the anointing of the Holy Spirit she proclaimed that all generations would call her "blessed". But imagery is a idol. The Roman Catholic Church has erred greatly in this profusion of Christ, God, Mary, angels and specific saints statues. I am relieved that they haven't tried to make a statue to depict the Holy Spirit!

So, do not try to defend that which is indefensible.....

Hi

A Chicago newspaper, The Herald News, refers to statue of Mary as an "idol." Please write to the author and to the editorial staff to tell them what you think. My response below.

Hi

I am disappointed with the article at http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/heraldnews/top/4_1_JO18_STATUE_S1.htm, which calls the statue an idol.

"Idol" has definite negative connotations, namely idolatry, worship of a false god. Since Catholics do not worship statues, or Mary, the term is out of line.

A better term would be "image" or "statue."

Also, the link to http://www.ourladyofthemillennium.com/ is incorrect - there is a space in front of the "our" which makes it an invalid link, which fails when merely clicked on.

Regards,
Stephen
