Subject: Stop Government Seizure of Homes and Churches!
THURSDAY, MAY 04, 2006
Dear Art,
What if you went to your local flower shop one day - but
when you got there, you found a newly-built government building instead?
Or you go to visit longtime friends - but when you arrive
at their home ... you find a casino built in its place.
Unfortunately, these are very real scenarios. And they
were further solidified when the Supreme Court of the United States ruled,
in the case of Kelo v. New London, that the government can seize private
property for the economic improvement of a community. In her dissent of the
ruling, then-Justice Sandra Day O'Connor said:
''Under the banner of economic development, all
private property is now vulnerable ... any single-family home ... might be
razed to make way for an apartment building, or any church ... might be
replaced with a retail store....''
This ruling destroys one of your most basic constitutional
freedoms ... your right to own private property! The ACLJ has no choice but
to act - and we are. Give your secure, online donation today to help us
work at the federal and state levels to reverse this disastrous ruling.
With your own home at risk - your own church at risk - any
and every small business at risk - we must see a legal safeguard enacted.
In answer to this need, Senator John Cornyn of Texas has
introduced a bill called ''The Protection of Homes, Small Businesses, and
Private Property Act of 2005.''
This legislation would prohibit transfers of private
property without the owner's consent if federal funds were used - and if the
transfer was for purposes of economic development rather than public use.
We must see this legislation passed. Your freedom and
security depend on it.
Give your online donation RIGHT NOW in support of the
ACLJ's stance with members of Congress and help move this bill into law.
At the same time, we are keeping an eye on states around
the Union where legislators are working on additional, strong safeguards.
But first - we must win at the federal level.
Our legal and legislative research teams are working with
members of Congress on Senator Cornyn's legislation. We are preparing
diligently to defend your constitutional Fifth Amendment right.
''....No person shall be ... deprived of life,
liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property
be taken for public use...."
The Fifth Amendment
But we need your help. Our efforts in support of your
freedoms - spread all across the nation, with the myriad state laws and
legislative bodies - are complicated and costly. So your support in giving
is vitally important.
Please stand with us by giving your online donation
immediately ... every day without passage of such legislation is another day
of jeopardy for private citizens, small businesses, and churches.
We are pursuing this tenaciously. But we need every
member of the ACLJ to be personally involved as well.
Please let me hear from you quickly. We need your strong
financial support to help us fight this fight and continue all of our
efforts to preserve life and liberty.
Thank you.
