Abortion Bill Would Ban Sex-Selection

WASHINGTON - Sex-selective abortion has created huge and rapidly growing sex ratio imbalances in Asian countries such as China and India.

Now there's evidence the practice is proliferating in the United States, and Congressman Trent Franks, R-Ariz., wants to stop it.

My comments:

Abortion is horrid. Sex-selective abortion is equally horrid. But - apart from adding to the general anti-abortion legislation, which is a good thing - how on earth can something like this be legislated?

Sarcastic examples of how to avoid this legal problem:

"Mrs Smith, your baby is a girl. I am only prepared to kill her if you want her killed for reasons other than gender. For what reason do you want her killed?"
"Current stock market prices?"

"Mrs Jones, your baby is an abominable product of rape-induced conception. We wish to kill it. However, since the rapist was not of the same racial group as you, we will only kill it if you assure us that you would have wanted it killed if the father had been the same race as you."
"It's a boy? Kill it."
