Ashes to Ashes
An early tradition of pre-Lenten repentance developed into our modern practice of Ash Wednesday.
By Jennifer Woodruff Tait
In the darkness of the quiet stone church on Ash Wednesday, I went forward to the front at the end of a long line and, when my turn came, knelt before the pastor. He prayed, "Almighty God, you have created us out of the dust of the earth: Grant that these ashes may be to us a sign of our mortality and penitence, that we may remember that it is only by your gracious gift that we are given everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen." Then he dipped his thumb in a small dish of ashes and, with the words "Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return," marked the sign of the cross on my forehead.

Did You Know?
Repentance was an involved process in the early church. Sin was seen not as a personal matter but as something that destroyed the unity of the church. Penitents fasted and prayed for the forgiveness of their sins, appeared before the church to make public confession, and were barred from the Lord's Supper until they gave evidence of a change of heart and were absolved. (The only exception was for people facing persecution. They were readmitted to the Lord's Supper so they could receive strength.)

The First Evangelical Magazine
Before there was Christian History, there was Christian History.
by Collin Hansen
Thomas Prince Sr. may have worried that the Great Awakening was fading when he and his son started the first evangelical magazine in 1743. But he wanted to publish a journal that would document the revival that had been spreading through the American colonies. Future generations could turn to the Christian History magazine and remember God's faithfulness. Click to continue.

Polishing the Puritan Image
A recent introduction to Puritan history rehabilitates their reputation and legacy.
Reviewed by Adrian Weimer
The esteemed Millersville historian Francis J. Bremer has recently given us a delightfully rich little volume, Puritanism: A Very Short Introduction. Bremer's now-classic works Congregational Communion: Clerical Friendship in the Anglo-American Puritan Community, 1610-1692 and John Winthrop: America's Forgotten Founding Father were groundbreaking in their transatlantic scope, and in this new book he ably traverses English and American contexts, highlighting cross-fertilization and emigration back and forth across the Atlantic.
