I don't know whether Eli's deterioriation is due to the cancer progressing
or despair. But in case it is due to despair from not being able to
continue his work, this might help:

This is a commercial Windows product that allows a user (often
handicapped, but not necessarily so) to control the mouse and press
virtual buttons via brainwaves. Once learned, this could allow Eli to
communicate and write despite being unable to speak.
There is also an open source project:

But I would not use homebrew hardware. Ideally, there would be a
medically certified sensor with an RCA analog signal connector and/or
USB digital interface for use with open source software.
