Dear Gathnetters,
First of all, I need to let you that I have changed my cell phone
number. It is now: 619 212 3252. I won't go into the reasons why this
was done, but it helps a number of people. I am now in our Beth's
family plan. I could quit my old contract because it was over. Beside
the new phone has a camera and all that kind of goodies in it.
As we approach the Memorial Day weekend, this 60th anniverserie of the
end of the wwII in Europe, I again remember the reason my Dad and the
others who who gave there lives in that war did it. It was to preserve
liberty for those of us here in the US and to liberate those under the
Nazi and Imperial Japanese thumb. I am not sure how many of you know
but my Dad was killed just about 50 miles from the village (Steimke) in
Germany from where the Gathmans orginated. He really was liberating the
German people from the Nazi evil. I hope we all appreciate what they
did. In these days when it seems that our liberties are being curtailed
by courts and laws we need to remember what was given to us as a gift.
I wonder if this country has the unity and "guts" to repeat the deeds of
those whom we remember.
I think of those gathnetters who are in the service today, especially
our Jim and Scott and Kurt Glennon. Thank you guys for all you do for
us!!!! It is interesting that we really are a Navy family now. Jim is
on deployment with the USS Paul Hamilton. He sent us a number of very
interesting pictures of a visit they recently made to Okanawa. While
they aren't being shot at at this moment, they are ready for any
contingency. I am really proud of "my boys"!!!
love to you all, der alt grossvater.
