In the message, I just sent you, I wrote, "Together,
that's at least 70 votes, more than the 67 needed for
confirmation."

Actually, it only takes only 51 votes to confirm a
nominee to the Supreme Court. 

However, it takes 60 votes to invoke cloture to
terminate a filibuster. (It might be the pro-lifers
who need to filibuster against Gonzales to stop him.)
It used to take 67 votes to invoke cloture, but that
was lowered to 60 votes several years ago. (It takes
67 votes to ratify a treaty, like the Panama Canal
Treaty.)

Anyway, the only votes against Gonzales will be from
the strongest liberals and the strongest conservatives
in the Senate. I would expect that he would get at
least 70 votes for confirmation.

If pro-lifers filibuster against him, I'm not sure how
many liberals and how many conservatives would vote
for cloture, since that changes the quesiton from
confirmation to the question of whether court nominees
should be subject to a filibuster.

It is theoretically possible that a coaliton could be
put together for 41 senators to defeat cloture and
prevent a Gonzales nomination from coming to a vote.

I'm sick of Republican presidents appointing the likes
of Blackmun, Stevens, O'Connor, Kennedy, and
Souter to the Supreme Court.

To quote the famous line from Pogo, "We have met the
enemy and he is us!"

The Supreme Court is for all the marbles! This is 
it: the fight of a lifetime!
