Hi
Apparently Avery Cardinal Dulles is not a bishop. When a non-bishop becomes a cardinal, he is now normally consecrated as a bishop first, but Pope John Paul II agreed to a dispensation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avery_Dulles
On the Catholic Heirarchy website he is not listed as being a bishop - http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/bishop/bdulles.html - unlike Cardinal Arinze at http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/bishop/barinze.html. He is listed on the page with living bishops, but possibly only because he's a cardinal?
Henri Cardinal de Lubac is another - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_de_Lubac. On the page of deceased bishops, he's listed as a priest of the Society of Jesus, not a bishop of anywhere.
Can anyone confirm that Cardinal Dulles is not a bishop? I've found numerous articles saying that he is not (e.g. http://www.crisismagazine.com/julaug2001/feature1.htm.) http://www.fordham.edu/dulles/bio.shtml, his own university, doesn't explicitly state that he never became one, but only that he was created cardinal by "Pope John Paul II, the first American-born theologian who is not a bishop to receive this honor" ... and I take that to be sloppy punctuation and that Dulles was the American-born theologian.
God bless,
Stephen

Subject: Non-bishop cardinals
Hi
How many of the current cardinals are not bishops of some sort or other? (Bishop, archibishop, patriarch, etc.)
http://ncrcafe.org/node/1378 has a list of the new cardinals - two are priests, the rest are bishops, including one patriarch..
The last lay cardinals were at the time of Pope Pius IX.
God bless,
Stephen
