A Turning Point for the Church in America?
Dear Miss Dawson,I've been saying it for the past several years now: The Church
in America is getting healthier, and the episcopate is becoming more Catholic.
After decades of lay criticism, the episcopate is considering what to do about
the notorious US Catholic Campaign for Human Development. See our exclusive
story: CCHD facing key test of support among US bishops.
If you're having any trouble at all putting this in perspective, then Phil
Lawler's latest In Depth Analysis is a must: The time is now for reform of the
CCHD. This article is just what you've come to expect from CatholicCulture.org:
Clear, accurate, feasible and outside the American secular box.
Another brilliant contribution to what it ought to mean to be Catholic is
Archbishop Charles Chaput's challenging address earlier this week on Living
within the Truth: Religious Liberty and Catholic Mission in the New Order of the
World.
To follow Chaput's lead in fighting secularism effectively, one thing we must do
is counter the distortion of so much of the news by the secular media. Consider
Diogenes' report on the treatment of the scientists who precipitated the recent
court restriction of embryonic stem cell research: Whatever you do, don't
mention the science.
We also have to combat the tendency of secular culture to seek a moral high
ground in the bureaucratic pursuit of the trivial. I have a little story for you
about that: A man walks into a bar....
I want to remind you again that St. Augustine's Feast is tomorrow. His writings
become more relevant by the day, as our culture secularizes. But I'm also
increasingly excited about John Henry Cardinal Newman's upcoming beatification
on September 19th. Reports have just announced that his feast day will be
October 9th.
Astonishingly, our shortfall of nearly $10,000 has been slashed to $3,500 in the
past 24 hours by 43 extremely generous supporters. We have five days to go to
raise the rest. As we get closer to breaking even, every gift matters—no matter
how small.
Blessings!
